Most people apply deodorant without a second thought. It is something that many people need and is part of their essential daily routine, right? We don’t often stop to think about what goes into making products such as these. So, when I found out that my deodorant contained chemicals and additives that could potentially be harmful to my health I was appalled.
Like I said it was never something I really put any thought into. Once I started researching and finding out how harmful these ingredients could be I have been trying to avoid them. Which is why I am sharing this information in this article with you today. Most people were probably just like me and applying their deodorant without putting much thought into what went into making it. By knowing what these ingredients are we can make better decisions for our health by choosing better and safter options that are more natural. Below I will share the list of ingredients with you that you should try to avoid at all costs. Of course you can always try to do the research on your own to find new products and this list will help you, but if you would like some help here is a list of deodorants you can use and feel good about.
Aluminum
One of the most concerning ingredients found in many deodorants is aluminum. Aluminum is a metal that is used as an antiperspirant in many deodorants. It works by clogging the sweat glands in the underarm area. This in turn reduces our body’s ability to sweat and helps to control body odor. However, aluminum has been linked to many health concerns. Some of which include breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Studies have also shown that aluminum can be absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream. This raises concerns about its potential health effects, especially when it’s included in a product that we use so close to our lymph nodes.
Fragrance
Fragrance is another common ingredient. It is not only in deodorants, but in almost all of our personal care products, cleaning products, and cosmetics. “Fragrance” is a catch-all term which means companies are allowed to include over 3000 different ingredients under this one term. The companies do not have to disclose them either and this is supposed to be able to allow them to keep their recipe “secret”. Unfortunately, many studies have found that a lot of the “fragrances” contain phthalates.
Phthalates in Fragrance
Phthalates are a group of chemicals that are often used in fragrances to help them last longer. They are used to help the fragrance adhere to the skin and release slowly over time. Multiple studies have linked phthalates to health conditions related to the lungs, kidney, liver, endocrine system, and the reproductive system.
When looking for a deodorant that is free from phthalates, it’s important to check the ingredient list for any of the following names:
- DEP (diethyl phthalate)
- DBP (di-n-butyl phthalate)
- DEHP (di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate)
- DMP (dimethyl phthalate)
Another option is to opt for a deodorant that is made with natural ingredients such as essential oils, which can provide a pleasant scent without the use of synthetic fragrances.
Parabens
Another ingredient to avoid in deodorant is parabens. Parabens are a type of preservative that is commonly used in personal care products to extend their shelf life. Some of the possible parabens found in deodorants include methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. Parabens have been linked to health problems like breast cancer and hormonal imbalances. Studies have also found that parabens can mimic estrogen in the body, which can lead to a variety of health problems.
Some of the possible parabens that may be found in deodorants include:
- Methylparaben
- Ethylparaben
- Propylparaben
- Butylparaben
- Isobutylparaben
- Isopropylparaben
- Benzylparaben
It’s important to note that these are just a few examples of parabens that may be found in deodorants, and there may be others as well. Be sure to check the ingredient list for any of the above names or for the word “paraben” in general.
Propylene Glycol
Propylene glycol is another ingredient that is widely used in deodorants. It is a humectant, which means that it helps to keep products moist. However, it can also be an irritant to the skin and eyes. Some studies have also shown that it can cause allergic reactions in some individuals.
Triclosan
Triclosan is another common ingredient in deodorants, antiperspirants, and other personal care products. It is a chemical that is used as an antimicrobial agent to kill bacteria and others. Triclosan is associated with a variety of health problems, such as hormone imbalances and bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.
BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene)
In personal care products such as deodorants, this synthetic antioxidant is used to extend shelf life. It may, however, cause endocrine disruption and organ system toxicity.
Talc
A mineral often used as an absorbent in cosmetics and personal care products, like deodorants. It has been linked to potential health concerns such as respiratory problems and ovarian cancer.
Silica
This is an ingredient used in deodorants to absorb moisture, but it is known to cause skin irritation and dryness. There is also concern over silica in deodorants being contaminated with crystalline quartz, a compound that has been linked to respiratory diseases and the development of cancer cells.
Steareths
Steareths are a class of ingredients that are commonly used as thickening agents in personal care products, including deodorants. They are derived from stearic acid and can be found in a variety of forms. They can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions in some individuals. If you have sensitive skin or are concerned about the ingredients in your personal care products, it is best to avoid products that contain steareths and look for natural alternatives. Always check the ingredient list before purchasing.
Here is a list of some common steareths that may be found in deodorants and other personal care products:
- Steareth-2
- Steareth-20
- Steareth-21
- Steareth-100
- Steareth-101
- Steareth-150
- Steareth-200
- Steareth-250
- Steareth-300
- Steareth-400
When looking for a deodorant or other personal care product that is free from steareths, be sure to check the ingredient list for any of the above names or for the word “steareth” in general.
TEA and DEA
Triethanolamine (TEA) and diethanolamine (DEA) are chemicals that are often used as emulsifiers and pH adjusters in personal care items. They help blend ingredients and balance the pH level of the product. DEA and TEA, however, are both associated with health problems such as skin irritation, allergies, and cancer. They can also form nitrosamines, which are potential carcinogens.
Dyes
Lastly, dyes; yet another unnecessary additive that benefits us in no way other than finding our deodorant to be appealing. They are used to give deodorants a variety of different colors. However, some dyes can be potentially harmful and can cause allergic reactions which begs the question… why does our deodorant need to be colored at all?
Are you ready for some good news?!
There are alternative options out there that do work and that have absolutely none of the ingredients listed above. I know switching out our personal care items can seem daunting and even discouraging when trying to find one that works for you. However, I have come up with a list of the deodorants that are completely non-toxic for you to start trying to find your new favorite.
A side note to remember when switching to a natural deodorant. Sometimes, when detoxing from aluminum deodorants, our armpits can have a reaction. Try not to be alarmed, just understand that your body is adjusting and that giving up on the product, or immediately switching to a new one might not be the answer. Your body might just need some time to adjust and get used to your new non-toxic products while it detoxes from the old one.
