Is lotion really necessary for your skin? In short, yes, it is. A daily moisturizer is necessary to maintain your skin’s moisture barrier and to prevent environmental damage to your skin. Regularly using lotion and moisturizer should be a part of any good skin care regimen, but some are better than others. Which, of course, is the entire reason for this post. Your skin is so important for so many reasons and you want to keep it healthy. Slathering it with chemical filled products does not sound like the best idea to keep it healthy and looking good. You want to use lotions or moisturizers that are going to nourish and actually hydrate your skin. If you didn’t use lotion at all what do you think would happen to your protective barrier we call our skin? Well, let me tell you.
After a few days nothing too drastic would happen. You’d notice your skin feeling dry, tight, and ashy, because you’d rapidly be losing water. Moisturizer doesn’t just add water back into your skin, it also traps in the water you already have to plump it up and protect it.
After a month you’d see some damage. Your skin barrier would be officially compromised. In layman’s terms, that means your skin would be so deprived of water that it would no longer be doing its job as a protective shield from outside irritants. You’d see inflammation on the skin, like redness and blotchiness when you’d apply makeup, or irritation from your clothes.
After a year, however, you’d be screwed. More or less. Over the years, you’d be having decreased skin elasticity, increased fine lines and wrinkling, sagging, dullness, and severe irritation. And, no, slathering on some lotion at that point wouldn’t fix it. Most of those changes are irreversible. You would need fillers or injections to salvage the damage. Think of it like this; you can salvage a grape when it’s wrinkly, but when it’s a raisin, there’s no going back.
If you want help with some healthy and safe lotions that you can use to keep your skin healthy then you are in the right place. And if you haven’t done so already, I encourage you to check out my post regarding the ingredients to avoid in your lotions here.
Attitude
This was the first brand of lotion that I bought when going non-toxic. With 16 ounces for the same price as every other lotion on the list that comes in 4-8 ounce containers, Attitude Sensitive is probably the most affordable choice when it comes to lotion. I do believe it is crucial to point out that this product contains citric acid, though as this comes from black mold. This component is safe according to every study that I can locate. As always, I do strongly encourage you to conduct your own research and draw your own conclusions.
The scents come in a regular and a sensitive line. For the sensitive line it comes in Chamomile, Argan Oil, Avocado Oil, and Unscented. For the regular line the scents are White Tea Leaves, Olive Leaves, Lemon Leaves, Red Vine Leaves, Orange Leaves, and Unscented.
Earthley’s Lotion Options
Moisturize Me is an all-natural and botanical moisturizer designed specifically for the face. Formulated with non-comedogenic and essential oils, this product hydrates and replenishes the skin. Moisturize Me is food for the face that will nourish skin to relieve concerns like acne and dry, flaky skin. They offer both a Dry and Oily skin formula. If you have combination skin, they recommend trying the Oily formula.
Goodnight Lotion offers 200mg of magnesium per teaspoon of lotion. Did you know that magnesium performs over 300 essential functions in your body. Including promoting healthy sleep, natural detox, healthy blood sugar levels, and gut health. Earthley’s blended pure magnesium chloride with nourishing oils and butters that moisturize your skin while the magnesium absorbs quickly. The result is healthy skin and a healthy body! It also comes in two difference scents which are original (lavender scented) and sensitive (unscented).
Earthley’s Whipped Body Butter has rave reviews and this luxurious lotion is going to be your best option for all over the body to hydrate and protect. They offer it in Spring Blossoms, Lavender, Christmas Cookie, Blueberry-Vanilla, and Vanilla Bean.
Soothing Skin Balm (eczema relief) is a fantastic option if you have dry, itchy skin, psoriasis, or any other skin condition. The entire family may use this, and the reviews are gushing about how well it works to treat eczema in both children and adults.
Soothing Belly Butter was created especially for pregnant women, but it has quickly gained popularity for all skin types. You won’t wonder why after you experience its all-natural cocoa scent and plush texture. Many of the reviews also talk about this being another great option for eczema prone skin as well.
Chocolate Lotion Bar Lotion to go! This is made with the same ingredients as in their Whipped Body Butter, but a little more solid and a lot more convenient! Take this deliciously scented bar of moisture anywhere in its convenient metal tin.
Just Ingredients
This body lotion is a non-greasy formula that comes in a light citrus scent that people seem to really love. Multiple reviews state that this lotion works great for eczema after they have tried what seemed like everything else out there. If you use my coupon code HealthisWealth10 you can get a discount on all their products. There are four other scents and they all smell phenomenal! They now come in larger sizes as well!
Earth Mama
Another one of my first non-toxic lotion swaps was Earth Mama baby lotion, and I genuinely adored it. As I delve deeper into the non-toxic space, it becomes clearer to me that some of these things will cost a little bit more than the mainstream items you can pick up at the stores. In this instance, that is the case. It is a relatively small container for a not so small price tag. However, this lotion smells amazing, and you really don’t need a lot of it. And yes, technically it is a baby lotion but there’s no harm in using this on yourself as well.
Sweet Orange, Lavender Vanilla, or Unscented (for sensitive skin) are the scents available for this.
There’s also an eczema creme available from Earth Mama.
Carina Organics
This lotion does not have a lot of information on it nor does it have a lot of reviews. However, if you have seen my shampoo list then you will have noticed that this brand has squeaky clean ingredients. This hand cream is no different. This is a great option of safe and non-toxic ingredients. They offer it in sweat pea, unscented and baby lotion.
Pai Lotion
This is a great and clean option. It has a bunch of great reviews. It seems to be good for all skin types, even sensitive skin. However, the downside to this is that it is more on the expensive side compared to the rest. They have it in a hand rescue cream and body cream.
Maty’s Baby Eczema Relief
This a fantastic option if you have dry, itchy skin that needs extra care or suffer from eczema. Although this costs more than Earthley’s eczema alternative, it is available on Amazon. I can see the attraction of that aspect as it is more convenient than other options. Although eczema can be difficult to manage, it really just comes down to personal preference and having more options to explore.
Pipette Relaxing Body Lotion
Pipette is a good non-toxic option. This, just like Attitude, does have the addition of citric acid. As previously stated, citric acid is derived from black mold. But according to all the studies I can find, it is completely safe. I want to give you the facts so that you can make the more informed decision for yourself.
They have Relaxing Body Lotion (scent is Bergamot, mandarin orange, and geranium flower), Eczema Lotion, Belly Butter, and baby lotion which comes in vanilla+ylang ylang and rose+geranium.
As always I hope this was helpful and I hope that you found something that you liked and are wanting to give a try. However, in the end of course the choice is yours. You are always encouraged to do your own research if nothing catches your eye here. Personally, I feel comfortable applying these lotions I’ve listed for you in this post on both myself and my family.
