If you’ve checked out my post about what’s in your laundry detergent, you’ll know you have your work cut out for you in finding something better. However, I have some good news I have done some of the searching for you!
I’ve created a list of laundry detergents I feel confident using in my own home. I have personally used some of these for myself and my children so you can feel assured when looking for a non-toxic laundry detergent for your family that these are safe.
These are in no specific order. Giving you as many options as I can will enable you to select the option that best suits your needs and financial situation. I hope you are able to choose one that you like and that will work for you.
Truly Free
Truly Free is a subscription service. You can get laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, dishwashing detergent, hand and dish soap, air freshener, dry angel which is their version of the dryer sheet, and more. You can basically replace everything you have as far as home needs and it is all non-toxic products. Your first order you will get the jug for laundry and the spray bottles for the cleaners that you will keep once they are empty and then just continue to order the refill packs for the future orders.
I am currently using this for laundry, and I am obsessed with the dryer angel scent! But it seems very cost effective if you ask me compared to what you get in stores. They offer scented and unscented.
I almost forgot to mention that you do get free items in each box you order and get discounts with the more items you order which I have found to be a pretty great deal.
Earthley Laundry Detergent
The most gentle, yet effective ingredients are used to create Earthley’s Laundry Detergent. The natural power of washing soda, citric acid, and saponified oils combine to clean clothing without brighteners, fragrances, or dyes. They also included bromelain, an enzyme naturally derived from pineapples, to fight stains. The result is a pure, all-natural laundry detergent that is perfectly safe for sensitive skin.
Natural essential oils are added to the Citrus scent to leave behind a light, fresh smell. However, if you prefer unscented products, they have that option available as well. One bag provides you with 60 loads of laundry. It is septic safe and also safe for HE washers. It works with hard water as well and is also biodegradable, so it is safe for the environment.
The scents it comes is Citrus, Spring Blossoms, Eucalyptus-Spearmint, and Unscented.
Molly’s Suds Laundry Detergent
Molly’s Suds is a great option. They offer a ton of products including specified “baby” detergents, laundry pods, powder detergents, liquid detergents, basically anything to fit your preference.
There has been some reports that Molly’s Suds doesn’t provide that luxurious laundry smell that some people look for, but others say they love it. Either way, this is an easy option offered on Amazon with ingredients you can trust. There is an array of scents as well such as Unscented, Citrus Grove, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Peppermint, and for the baby scents there are Sweet Baby Shea, and Unscented. It also comes in an active wear formula.
Meliora Laundry Detergent
Meliora Laundry Detergent is a good, inexpensive option that gives you 128 loads in a high efficiency washer.
The main ingredient in their detergent is baking soda. Some people may have a sensitivity to this, but if you don’t fall into that category then this is a great option. The ingredients are great and non-toxic.
This detergent is offered in four different scents which are lavender, lemon, lemon lavender clove and unscented.
Branch Basics
Branch Basics is a concentrated soap. This one bottle of concentrate can basically be used for anything! It is gentle enough to be used on your body and still tough enough to be used as your kitchen and bathroom cleaner as well as on your laundry. One bottle of concentrate will last up to 192 loads of laundry! This laundry kit also comes with the oxygen boost, which is used for pre-treating stains, whitening & brightening, and deodorizing laundry. You can buy these items separately if you just wanted to buy the concentrate and give that a try. The laundry bottle is also reusable as well so you can keep it and just refill and just keep buying the concentrate as you run out. There is also an option of buying a glass bottle if you prefer that over the plastic. I would like to add that if you purchase through my link you will get $10 off your order!
GreenShield Organic Detergent
This is yet another great option. It is organic and comes in lavender scent and then non-scented or as they call it “free and clear”. There is not a lot of product information for this one. However, the ingredients are clean and safe and there are tons of great reviews on it.
Dr. Bronners’s Concentrated Pure Castile Soap
This is a more unique option as is not specifically made for just laundry. It is a concentrated castile soap which means it needs to be diluted if you use it for cleaning and if you use it for laundry, you only need a very small amount. This option is a little more on the pricey side, however, you get a very large jug and remember that a little goes a long way so this jug will last you a very long time. So, in reality the cost comparison is probably about the same as buying other laundry detergents. You will just pay more up front and not have to buy it as often. There are quite a few scents with this one as well such as lavender, peppermint, citrus, tea tree, eucalyptus, and rose.
Rosey by Thrive Market
The Rosey unscented detergent powder is a great option. However you do need to have a membership with Thrive Market in order to purchase. I would not recommend the liquid detergents or the scented powder. This is because they do not disclose what they use for their fragrance.
If you are not a member of Thrive Market and think you would be interested in signing up it is very easy to join. You can join here with 40% off your first order. Besides laundry detergent, they have a lot of clean snacks, foods, and other household products I would totally recommend. I am a member myself and find the membership totally worth it.
They ship their stuff pretty fast, so I find it quite convenient. Of course, you do what works best for you.

Hopefully you found one on here that caught your eye, and you are wanting to give a try! Please remember that this is not an all-inclusive list. There are other safe and clean detergents you can use out there. I will try to add to this list as I find more as well. Keep checking back if you would like additional help with your searching. If you would like to read about the chemicals that you want to try avoiding in your laundry detergent, you can visit my post about ingredients if you haven’t done so already.
I do want to add that with these swaps, when I list a brand that doesn’t mean the entire brand is safe! For example, the brand Attitude I have found to be generally safe for most of their products EXCEPT for their laundry detergent. So please keep this in mind. I think most of the other brands I have come across so far are ALL clean, but still pay attention to ALL of the labels even if you find one product that is clean.
